Housekeeping and recovery of Combustible/Conductive Dusts: A Big Step in the Right Direction

Until today the certification of Hazloc Portable Vacuum Cleaners and Dust Collectors as per the Ex OSHA/NRTL system, the IECEx Scheme and the European ATEX system covers only the possibility to use the equipment in hazardous locations/areas in presence of combustible/conductive dusts, but does not cover the possibility to use the equipment to recover these dusts.
Today we are proud to inform you that all Tiger-Vac EX certified vacuum cleaners have an additional certification: the inner parts of the Portable Vacuum Cleaners and Dust Collectors are certified ATEX Category 1 for providing a very high protection level allowing the safe recovery of combustible/conductive dusts.
Incidents were reported regarding, for example, ATEX Zone 22 “Vacuums”, not approved by the Authorities Having Jurisdiction, catching on fire and jeopardizing the health and safety of workers when this unsafe equipment is used for recovering combustible/conductive dusts in the work place.

Cleanroom Vacuum Cleaner System for Class II Division 2

Finally, a static dissipative and conductive cleanroom vacuum cleaner!
Tiger-Vac's ESD safe CWR-10EX (4W) series is suitable for general, dry clean-up in controlled environments and cleanrooms rated Class II Division 2 (Zone 22 [dust]). Any static produced while vacuuming is quickly and effectively discharged to ground.
CWR-10EX (4W) is equipped with 4 filters: true dual ULPA Filters (U15) are located downstream of the motor while 2 HEPA filters (H14) are included within the powerhead, making it eligible for IP6X. This model is EMI/RFI Shielded and will not disrupt computers and sensitive electronic equipment.  The recovery tank is stainless steel and autoclavable.
CWR-10EX (4W) can be equipped with a middle-ring with activated carbon for neutralization of toxic/noxious fumes and vapours.

Portable Vacuum Cleaners and Dust Collectors for Division 2 – Zone 22 Hazardous Locations

The OSHA Combustible Dust Program tells us to refer to the primary National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) consensus standard related to this hazard which is: NFPA 654: Standard for the Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosion form Manufacturing Processing and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids.
According to NFPA 654, as little as 1/32 of an inch of organic dust over 5 percent of a room's surface area presents a significant explosion hazard. Considering this, the HAZ-LOC PORTABLE VACUUM CLEANERS ORGANIZATION INC. recommends to only use certified vacuum cleaners for Division 1 in areas where the quantity of organic dust is above 1/32 of an inch over 5 percent of a room's surface area.
So is this the only equation? Of course not!
A dust analysis and risk assessment must always be done regarding the type of dust existing in the atmosphere, and the risk of an explosion. This needs to be implemented in Hazardous Locations in order to define what type of equipment is needed, which in our case, refers to Portable Vacuums Cleaners or Dust Collectors.
Tiger-Vac offers Legally Certified Explosion Proof / Dust Ignition Proof Vacuum Cleaners for Division 1, and we also offer Vacuum Cleaners with an enhanced level of protection for Division 2.

Portable Vacuum Cleaners for Division 2 – Zone 22 Hazardous Locations

At Tiger-Vac we are very attentive regarding new regulations for the certification of portable vacuum cleaners to recover combustible dust.
Our North American standards for hazardous locations are based on requirements pertaining to Division 1 and Division 2, Class II, Groups F and G combustible dusts.
Today the NEC (NFPA 70) has embraced the IEC International Standard for Zone 20, 21, 22 Dust. Does this mean that we should be burying our Division 1 and Division 2? Of course not. Since we are open to International Standardizations we will use the "Zone" system as referenced:
Division 1 = Zone 20, Zone 21
Division 2 = Zone 22
Please be aware of the following when referring to European Zone 22 Equipment – The equipment for ATEX Zone 22 are not certified as per our North American "NRTL" system. This certification is, none the less, a must.
In Europe these "Zone 22 Certified Equipment" are certified by the manufacturer itself and not by an "NRTL" certified laboratory like here in North America.
Since our Division System is different than the European Zone System we must be very vigilant when we compare vacuum cleaners to "recover" or "collect" combustible dust in Division 2 – Zone 22. The eligible portable vacuum cleaner in this case can be called EPL Dc, but these vacuum cleaners are not safe to recover large quantities of combustible dusts. Only EPL Da, Db vacuum cleaners can be used to safely recover large quantities of combustible dusts.
Recommendations can be found in NFPA 654. NFPA 654 states: "Where layers of combustible dusts are less than 1/32" (0.8 mm) thick on 5% of the floor surface up to 100 ft² (93 m²) is considered a threat of explosion. So as per NFPA if the thickness of the combustible dust is more than 1/32" (0.8 mm) then an EPL Da or Db vacuum cleaner is required."
We are pleased to feature our latest model ATEX-22E/BLSD-22. This unit is certified EPL Dc for Division 2 – Zone 22 hazardous locations. This vacuum cleaner provides all of the same internal protections as EPL Da, Db vacuum cleaners, except for the external Powerhead. All of the electrical components bare the EPL Dc certification for Division 2 – Zone 22.

What are conductivity and impedance?


Conductivity and impedance are two measures related to electricity. While conductivity indicates how easily electricity will travel through an object, impedance indicates how an object will resist to this electrical current.


Why is it important?


It is crucial to keep in mind that although a vacuum cleaner is pneumatically (air) operated (hence not relying on an electrical power source), static electricity will develop during usage. The build-up of static electricity could create a sparking hazard and an ignition hazard. Grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to prevent the build-up static electrical charge and to ensure that static electricity is discharged to ground.


Testing and certification


Tiger-Vac offers a wide variety of tested, as well as tested and certified pneumatically (air) operated vacuum cleaners. We recommend only certified units to be used in hazardous locations. For maximum security to the user and for your installations, they should be the obvious choice.

Featuring a stainless steel recovery tank, these units are equipped with a true HEPA Filter (H14) located upstream of the motor.  They are designed for point of generation dust control for the recovery of lead, cadmium, chromium, strontium, zinc and barium.  Fully integrated automatic on/off switch.  Valve is fully pneumatically (air) operated with no electrical components and is controlled by vacuum assisted dustless hand tools.  This is a dry recovery only Dustless Sanding Kit.  This unit is equipped with a 4-stage Filtration System which consists of a HEPA Filter (H14), Main Cloth Filter, Safety Filter and Disposable Filter Bag.  Recovery capacity is 3.5 gallons (13.3 liters) in Disposable Filter Bags.  Complete system includes a sander, hose, abrasives start-up kit and filters to ensure turn-key operation.  Abrasives are available in PSA (sticky), Hook and Loop (Velcro) or screen type.  Many different grits available.  All of our HEPA Dustless Sanding Kits are Aerosol Leak Tested before leaving our facility.

Equipped standard with a manual filter shaker (MFS), this 3-phase vacuum offers added protection and flexibility for the end-user who can now proceed with filter maintenance of the housing chamber in a specific location.
 
This innovative unit is equipped with a maintenance-free, side channel blower with a lifespan greater than 25,000 hours and static dissipating washable (PTFE) Teflon®-coated main filter. Tiger-Vac is pleased to introduce its latest model designed for the neutralization of recovered combustible, conductive and explosive dusts into an Immersion Bath System. Our uniquely designed Baffled Mechanism insures that the recovered dusts become inert when mixed with the neutralizing liquid within the recovery tank. The entire vacuum cleaner can also be rendered inert when supplied with ARGON Gas. A Coalescing Filter Element (CFE) for moisture removal is located downstream, along with a HEPA Filter with an efficiency of 99.995% on 0.3 micron, to ensure that no bubbles or particulate air can escape the system. Turnkey System - all filters, as well as a complete tool kit, are included with the unit. A Conversion Kit is available to convert for wet and dry recovery.


When dealing with the recovery of combustible/conductive metal dusts such as: Aluminum, Magnesium and all other dusts classified as commercial alloys: these dusts can cause an exothermic reaction and more severe damage than other types of combustible dusts. Because of this our system complies with NFPA, NEC and OSHA standards set for combustible, conductive dusts and flammable gases locations - Class I - Groups C & D and Class II - Groups E, F and G.


Please note the following: NFPA 484 standard for Combustible Metals - Vacuum cleaning shall be used only if listed or approved for use with combustible aluminum dust. It also states -  Typical Precipitation Collector for portable dust producing equipment are acceptable. The reaction of water and aluminum produces Hydrogen. Hydrogen is extremely flammable and very easy to ignite. Do not use water in this case in the Immersion Bath System when recovering aluminum and many other commercial alloys.

Fuel and Solvent Recovery Vacuum Cleaners with Activated Carbon Filter

The Tiger-Vac Vacuum Cleaners for Fuel and Solvent Recovery are the most advanced in the industry for Aircraft Maintenance. These units are all constructed of stainless steel SAE 304 and equipped with identifying red and yellow bands - meets NFPA 30 Chapter 4 (Container and Portable Tank Storage). They are available in both electrically or pneumatically (air) operated versions. Turnkey System -  a Liquid Filter, as well as a De-Fueling Suction Hose, are included with the unit. Other tools and accessories for recovering spills off of the floor are also available.


When Fuel or Solvents are recovered, the vapors that are emitted from the Exhaust Port (downstream) of the vacuum cleaner must be evacuated or neutralized. There are two options to be considered in order to avoid vapor emissions being spread into the atmosphere and creating an explosive environment.
•    If Fuel or Solvents are recovered inside of a hangar, the vapor emissions created by the vacuum cleaner must be evacuated to the outside of the building. In order to do this the vacuum cleaner's external port must be equipped with a hose attachment for venting to the outside.


•    The other option is a Granular Activated Carbon Adsorption System (also called Activated Charcoal). This is added at the exhaust port of the vacuum cleaner and will absorb any vapors that are emitted by the vacuum cleaner. This type of system is ideal for the removal of almost any organic compounds.


Tiger-Vac provides these two options when Fuels or Solvents need to be recovered, for example, in aircraft de-fueling and de-puddling requirements. It is absolutely essential that a Legally Certified Explosion Proof Vacuum Cleaner certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) be used.
